Welcome to Mopac Happenings, the website for the book “How Mopac Got Its Name” by Alexander Cavalli. If you live in Austin you've driven on Mopac. If you've lived in Austin before the early 1970's you remember what Austin was like before Mopac was built and you probably remember how much it changed Austin's westside. Mopac has had an impact on the lives of Austinites for over 40 years and whether you love it or hate it or both, you can't live without it!

Did you know . . .

| It was possible to drive on Mopac before the road was completed and open? This led to a phenomenon called "Mopac-ing" where mostly young Austinites would cruise the empty boulevard. Occasionally they would bring a few beers (and other substances) along for the ride. There may even have been drag races, but reports of these are hard to verify. :) |
